Explosion-proof motors have an enclosure that is designed to contain any internal ignition of flammable gas or dust and prevent it from spreading to the hazardous atmosphere outside. Nidec Motor Corporation offers such motors through the US Motors and related brands, certified to standards for hazardous locations such as Class I Division 1 and Class II for combustible dust, with temperature codes defining maximum surface temperature. Construction uses a heavy cast iron frame, close-fitting flame paths, and sealed conduit boxes, and the motors are available in NEMA frame sizes with a wide horsepower range, usually as three-phase induction motors. They can be inverter-duty rated for use with variable frequency drives if the certification allows. Typical applications include refineries, chemical processing, pumping stations, grain handling, paint booths, mining and petrochemical plants.
