Solid-State Soft Starters
Solid-State Soft Starters are motor control devices that temporarily reduce motor terminal voltage during startup by controlling the firing angle of solid-state thyristors, providing a smooth, gradual acceleration of three-phase AC induction motors. By dampening starting current surges and mechanical torque spikes, these starters protect power distribution grids, belts, gears, and pump piping from mechanical water-hammer effects and mechanical stress. Key hardware features typically include antiparallel silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs), integrated bypass contactors to minimize operating heat loss after reaching full speed, adjustable current-limit dials, electronic overload protection circuits, and heavy-duty power busbars.
