A calibration target plate is a flat, dimensionally stable glass, ceramic or anodised metal plate carrying a precisely printed or etched pattern of dots or a checkerboard. In machine vision it is placed in the camera’s field of view so the vision controller can compute the pixel-to-millimetre scale, correct lens distortion and perspective tilt, and, for vision-guided robotics, relate camera coordinates to the robot’s coordinate system. Keyence supplies such targets as accessories for its vision-guided robotics systems, for example the OP-88218 vision-guided robotics calibration target and the OP-88216 camera calibration target for the RB-500 3D picking system, and its CV-X and XG-X controllers include calibration routines that read these patterns automatically. Target size is chosen to fill a large part of the field of view, and pattern pitch and printing accuracy determine the achievable calibration accuracy. A ‘CA-TP’ part number could not be found in Keyence’s catalogue.
