A calibration plate is a flat reference target carrying a precisely manufactured pattern, used with the HALCON machine vision software from MVTec to determine camera parameters. HALCON supports plates with a hexagonal or rectangular array of dark circular marks on a light background, with a defined number of marks and a known spacing, and the software finds the pattern, decodes a coded orientation mark, and calculates intrinsic parameters, lens distortion and pose of the camera relative to the plate. Plates are available in several sizes to match the field of view, from a few millimetres to well over a metre, and in materials such as ceramic, glass or aluminium with various thermal and flatness properties. The accuracy of the printed pattern directly influences measurement accuracy, so a certificate with the exact dimensions is generally supplied. Typical applications include 2D and 3D measurement, robot hand-eye calibration, stereo vision, and metrology and inspection systems.
