The KI5002 is a capacitive proximity sensor from ifm. Capacitive sensors respond to changes in the electric field in front of the sensing face and so can detect nearly any material, including plastics, glass, liquids, and powders, as well as metals. The sensitivity is adjustable with a potentiometer, which makes it possible to detect a medium through a container wall, such as the fill level in a plastic tank. It has a threaded cylindrical housing and a DC switching output. Typical applications are level detection, counting of non-metal parts, and detection of material in hoppers.
