The Lovejoy CJ type is the company’s version of the European standard curved jaw shaft coupling, now sold under Timken. It has three parts: two hubs with curved jaw faces and an elastomer spider whose teeth are crowned radially and axially. This geometry gives a torsionally soft connection that damps vibration and tolerates angular misalignment of up to 1.3°, along with parallel and axial offset, without metal-to-metal contact or lubrication. Urethane spiders come in four Shore hardness grades to trade stiffness against damping, and the coupling is fail-safe because the jaws continue to drive if the spider fails. Hubs are available in rough stock bore or finished inch and metric bores, in aluminium and steel, with maximum bore up to 200 mm and nominal torque up to about 28,000 Nm on the largest sizes. For zero-backlash servo use Lovejoy offers the related GS type. Typical applications are motor to pump, gearbox, compressor, fan, mixer and conveyor connections.
